Boxer

The Boxer is a relatively new breed originated in the 19th century. The direct ancestor of the Boxer was the Brabanter dog, the descendant of a large and powerful Molosser-type Bullenbeisser dog. The new breed was smaller and not suited for bull baiting, like its ferocious ancestors, but retained their high trainability, intelligence and desire to cooperate. Early Boxers were used for herding cattle and guarding houses. Many Boxers were successful circus and theater dogs. Independent thinking along with versatility, friendliness, and loyalty made Boxers very popular. Nowadays, they are among the most popular pet dogs in the USA and Europe.

The Boxer of today is a medium-sized, muscular, square headed, and short-coated dog. The wither height of this breed varies from 21 to 25 inches; the weight varies between 50 and 70 pounds. Females are smaller and more refined than males. There are no strict size restrictions in the breed standard for Boxers, but overall proportions are very important.

Though appearance is secondary to working abilities and temperament in the Boxer, show quality dogs should correspond to the official breed standard. The only acceptable coat color in this breed is fawn that can vary from light golden to red and mahogany. The only acceptable pattern in Boxers is brindle. Black stripes can be thin or broad. If black covers the most part of the body, it’s called “reverse brindle.” The face of the Boxer should be black. Only a small amount of white spots is allowed. Predominantly white, solid white, and solid black dogs are disqualified from conformation shows, but can compete in agility and obedience.

High quality Boxers should be very intelligent, even-tempered, dignified, and self-confident. Boxers are good with children, alert with strangers, and friendly and affectionate with the family. Extreme shyness and hyperactivity are considered serious faults in this breed. Like all large and strong dogs, Boxers need much exercise to keep fit. A short coat of the Boxer cannot protect the dog from cold, so it should not be kept outdoors. The Boxer is happy when it can be around the family and has an opportunity to play in the yard.
