Boxer Bulldogs
Boxer Bulldogs originated in Germany as a cross between the large Molosser-type Brabant Bullenbeiser and the English Bulldog. These medium-sized dogs were bred for bull baiting, controlling large cattle, and holding large prey during the hunt. Boxers became popular because of their independent thinking and desire to cooperate with humans. Even after bull baiting was banned and large prey disappeared from Europe, Boxers were popular as working dogs.
Boxer Bulldogs of today are among the most popular breeds in America and Europe. This breed is very versatile. It can be used as a service dog, guide dog for the blind, police and military dog. Boxers are good at obedience, agility, conformation, and other dog sports. This breed is well suited for the role of a family companion. What makes this breed popular as a pet is its intelligence and low maintenance.
Boxer Bulldogs are very muscular, square-headed dogs with tight skin and short coat. The size of males varies from 22.5 to 25 inches at the withers; females stand between 21 and 23.5 inches at the withers. The weight of males can reach 70 pounds; females reach about 60 pounds in weight. The main hallmark of the breed is its large head with a well defined stop and massive jaws. The teeth of the Boxer meet in a scissors bite. The muzzle in this breed is very short, that gives a secure grip, but affects the health of the dog. The nose of the Boxer is large, with open nostrils.
The AKC breed standard requires docking the tail in this breed, but ear cropping is optional. More and more owners prefer to leave the ears of their dogs in a natural shape. Uncropped ears of the Boxer are long and hanging. As for docking the tail, there are Boxer bloodlines with a very short tail that doesn’t need cropping. The only accepted coat color in this breed is fawn. The only accepted pattern is brindle, which actually means black stripes against a fawn background. Only a few white patches are allowed in this breed. Unlike in Bulldogs, solid white coat color is a serious fault in Boxer Bulldogs.
