Boxer Breeders

Early Boxer breeders produced dogs for bull baiting, hunting large game, and controlling the cattle. Boxers of the 19th century were larger and stronger than Boxers of today, but the personality and temperament of these dogs remained almost the same. These dogs are highly intelligent, versatile, low-maintenance, and easy to train.

Today, Boxer dogs are bred not for aggression, but for intelligence and health. Only devoted Boxer breeders keep their breeding stock and puppies in specious enclosures and allow them indoors. Living in a friendly and stress-free atmosphere is good for the development of a stable and obedient dog. To produce healthy puppies free from hereditary disorders responsible breeders screen the breeding stock carefully to prevent genetic disorders in the offspring. Most serious conditions can be prevented by simple DNA testing and breeding only healthy sires and dams.

Reputable and responsible Boxer breeders don’t breed for appearance, though in show quality Boxers, coat color and body structure are very important. Like all purebreds, Boxers are prone to a number of hereditary disorders. They are, for instance, hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism. Heart and digestive problems, such as aortic stenosis and bloat, are not hereditary, but are caused by improper living conditions or unsuited diet. A short muzzle of the Boxer may cause breathing problems, especially in hot and cold weather. Boxers should not be over exercised in hot and humid weather. Outdoor living is not for a dog of this breed, because a short coat of a Boxer doesn’t protect from temperature extremes.

When choosing a Boxer, decide what kind of a dog you need. If you are going to show the dog, buy a high quality puppy with a showing potential. If you need a family pet or a playmate for a child, buy a pet quality Boxer. Service dogs, therapy dogs, and guides should get special training. Though Boxers are easy to keep, a perspective Boxer owner should know much on the breed to be ready for a responsible ownership. Responsible Boxer breeders who care for the well being of their dogs don’t sell Boxer puppies to those who are not ready to own a massive and strong dog.
