The first Boxer's name was Muhlbauers Flocki, and he performed at a dog show in Munich, Germany. There, in 1896, the first Boxer club formed. Breed standard drafted in 1905 reflected the growing interest in the breed as it started to gain renown, which promptly transcended the national boundaries of Germany. This dog, called the 'Boxer', used its front paws when playing or fighting and thus got its name.

For a long time there was pretty much uncertainty regarding the breed's calling. Some people sought to inculcate in the dog the butcher qualities of early English Bulldogs, while others viewed Boxers as guard dogs or service dogs. Officials banned dogs with the white coat color and then reestablished them several times. Then in 1925, officials excluded black Boxers from the standard.

In 1938, Boxers that featured more than 1/3 of white of the coat color were banned. Yet still there are talks about reinitiating white species back into the standard. After World War II, the breed grew popular in the United States. Nowadays the breed enjoys worldwide popularity. Boxers, despite their somewhat awesome appearance, are the most amiable, amusing and playful family companions.
